John Wilcox, Charles City Co.VA & RI mid 1600's

I am numbering the following Captain John Wilcox’s in this post because of the repetition of their names as follows:

John Wilcox [1] d.1628 m Temperance Parker Burgess
John Wilcox [2] d. 1662 m Ann Custis Yeardley
John Wilcox [3] d. abt 1707 or 1714 of Charles City Co.,Va
John Wilcox [4] d. 1760 m Ann Jenings of Middlesex Co.

The following abstract was taken from Charles City County Virginia Court Orders 1687-1695 With a Fragment of a Court Order Book for the Year 1680, Benjamin B. Weisiger III, p 69:

“At a Court Holden at Westover 5th February 1693... Probate of will of Samuel Mosher, proved by oaths of Joseph Ingram and John Wilcox [3], is granted to Nicholas Mosher, the Executor”

I suspect that this John Wilcox [3] was Captain John Wilcox who was the originator of the Charles City County, Virginia Wilcox lines. The Joseph Ingram mentioned in this abstract is from Middlesex County, Virginia. These two Mosher’s (Samuel and Nicholas) are from RI. What were they doing in Charles City Co, Virginia? Is there a will for Samuel Mosher?

What makes this abstract so interesting is that this might indicate a possible RI connection to the Charles City Co. Va. Wilcox’s. I’m researching my ancestor, Captain John Wilcox (b. abt 1700 d. 1760) who married Ann Jenings, dau. of Va. Gov. Edmund Jenings. Captain John Wilcox is most likely from the Charles City Co. Wilcox lines. Family letters do indicate a connection to this line.

According to the Diary of Reverend Robert Rose of Amherst County, Va., the Charles City lines hail from the Accomack, Virginia - Wilcox lines. This line begins in 1619 with Captain John Wilcox [1] of Plymouth, England (d. 1627/8) who married the widow Temperance Parker Burgess, daughter of Captain William Parker, member of the London Company, privateer for England and consort of Frances Drake. Temperance returned to England, proved her husbands will and likely raised their son(s) there. There is no other record of her in Accomack County, Virginia.

It is assumed that Captain John Wilcox [2], who first appears in Accomack County, Virginia in 1635, is one of their sons. He married Ann Custis Yeardley (born in the Netherlands), widow of Argall Yeardley (son of Sir George Yeardley) and sister of John Custis from Rotterdam, Holland. Ann Custis Yeardley Wilcox is in and out of the county up until the early 1680's, making it very possible that her Wilcox children were also born in England. When Argal Yeardley died, his wife Ann (born in the Netherlands) and her second husband, Captain John Wilcox, maintained their relationship with Jacobson (of New Amsterdam) at least long enough to clear the accounts. Order book 1658, Jan 29 - Oct 28, 3. In fact, there was a very strong Dutch influence in Accomack County during this time period. This Ann did not married for a 3rd time to Capt. John Luke.

I have evidence that my Captain John Wilcox [4] was born in England. His last letter was address to him in Topsham, Devon, England. I also believe his father, another Captain John Wilcox [3], was also born in England. Because of their lively hoods, I strongly believe that this family kept homes on both sides of the Atlantic for 3-4 generations. Captain John Wilcox's [4] mother was still living in England in 1761.

I suspect the Captain John Wilcox [2] of Narragansett County, RI who owned the sloop named the Abigail and was involved with Roger Williams of RI was the same one who married Ann Custis. The dates and ages of both these Wilcox’s correlate. There is a good amount of information of the RI Capt. John Wilcox [2] in the Dutch Manuscripts. There are other indications of these captains being one and the same, which I will not go into for now. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone from the RI lines done a DNA test? Right now, I do not think that this Captain John Wilcox and Edward Wilcox of RI were related. However, I do think that Henry Wilcox who married Sarah Lewis of Maryland was likely the brother of Captain John Wilcox [2] who married Ann Custis Yeardley. Has anyone from this Maryland Wilcox line taken a DNA test?
