re harris/ hudson/ wilborn families va/ sc
hi
i recently posted this info to follow on the hudson forum.again, if there is someone who knows more about this john wilborn and his son, thomas wilborn or the wilborns, named as son-in-laws of william hudson, i would appreciate hearing from you.
thanks.

hi chris
i am very glad to hear from you and i have quite a lot to say.so, this is going to be somewhat long.
my own interest is that i keep trying to learn or confirm for sure, as i believe the info and records indicate, that my william harris, sr/ frances goode, whowere involved in lunenburg/ mecklenburg co, va with william harris/ judith hudsonfrom 1746 +, was the son, william, of william harris/ judith hudson.
both my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson were significantly involved with the will of john wilborn from 1757-1762 in lunenburg co, va.i think this is the same john wilborn and his son, thomas wiborn family, who married daughters of your william hudson.
sorry to say, i have been unable to find others interested in this john wilborn but he definitely seems to be a key as to whether my william harris, sr/ frances goode was related to william harris/ judith hudson.
instead of calling my william harris, sr/ frances goode or william harris/ judith hudson, jr and sr, in lunenburg/ mecklenburg co, va if they were father and son, they were called:
my william harris, sr/ frances goode as william harris of finneywood creek because in 1746 my william harris, sr/ frances goode had had this agreement with william marable re the plantation "finneywood" and william harris/ judith hudson was called william harris of woodpecker creek as they lived in the woodpecker creek area.
actually, my william harris, sr/ frances goode moved to and lived in the middle fork of the middle bluestone creek area, which must have been in close proximity to this woodpecker creek area which, again, was also in this same bluestone creek area.this bluestone creek area, then, became mecklenburg co, va in 1765.
whereas john wilborn and his wife, judith, lived also in this same woodpecker creek area and john wilborn's son, thomas wilborn continued to live there and to be involved with william harris/ judith hudson and these same individuals and families, it was my william harris, sr/ frances goode of finneywood, who was the executor of the will and estate of john wilborn.
again, i also definitely believe the info indicates that your william wilborn who married cary hudson and his brother jeremiah wilborn, who married mary/ polly hudson, daughters of william hudson, were related to this john wilborn and his son thomas wilborn, although i cannot tell you this for sure or exactly how they were related.
meanwhile, despite your having a cary hudson, the info indicates that the william hudson, whose daughter, cary, married your william wilborn, was not the william hudson, son of christopher hudson, but rather he is indicated to have been the william hudson, who was one of the executors of william harris/ judith hudson's 1778 mecklenburg co, va will and who was a younger son of peter hudson, sr and brother or 1/2 brother of judith hudson harris.
this is also indicated , again even though christopher hudson witnessed this deed and no dower renunciation given, to have been my william harris, sr/ frances goode, who in 1759 sold land to your william hudson in lunenburg co, va.i will cite this and other deeds below.
my william harris, sr/ frances goode; my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers; my mackerness goode, sr; his son, mackerness goode, jr; my john rodgers, esq; john, sr and rachel tinsely cargill, etc and a number of other of these same, related and associated families obtained ca 1768/ 1772 grants in this same little river of laurens co, sc and moved there from this lunenburg/ charlotte co, va area.
despite having obtained a 300 acre grant in laurens co, sc, i amnot actually sure that my william harris, sr/ frances goode did move to laurens co, sc.
a laurens co, sc deed, which, again, i will cite below, does show that your william hudson did move to laurens co, sc.
again, i think it wasalso your william hudson, who, along with william harris; reuben harris; and mark moore, who were the executors of william harris/ judith hudson's 1778 mecklenburg co, va will.
mark moore married rachel ragsdale , daughter of benjamin ragsdale, and moved with his brother-in-law peter ragsdale also to this same little river area of laurens co, sc by 1785where my william harris, sr/ frances goode; my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers; my mackerness goode, sr and jr, etc had obtained these earlier grants.
laurens co, sc deeds, which i will also cite below, indicate that mark moore and peter ragsdale had land adjacent my mackerness goode sr or jr and were involved there with the samejoel burgess family, who was also involved theremy william harris, jr/ frances rodgers and his brother-in-law patrick cunningham.
as you will note, per the laurens co, sc deed i will cite, re your william hudson that james poole is also stated to have been a son-in-law of your william hudson.the info on the poole/ pettypoole family states that james poole married ursula hudson, daughter of your william hudson in 1782 in mecklenburg co, va.
you can find this info on the poole/ pettypoole families, including this info re james poole/ ursula hudson, on-line.
here is a lunenburg co, va deed which shows that peter hudson, sr did have a son william hudson.i cannot tell you exactly when your william hudson was born only that he is indicated to have been born some time after 1724.
lunenburg co, va deed book 5, page 316, 1758, william hudson of lunenburg to peter fontaine of hanover co, va for 100 pds, 400 acres on the north side of the staunton river and on the upper side of the buffalo creek, being part of a 3, 280 tract of land granted to peter hudson, decd, on august 1754 and bounded by the said peter fontaine, new lines, benasas branch, james hudson.signed:william hudson, his mark.no witnesses.
despite having died in 1752, this is still peter hudson, sr, who is indicated to have obtained this above grant, which became part of his estate settlement and legacy to his heirs. this james hudson was william hudson's brother and also son of peter hudson, sr.james hudson married agnes burton, daughter of james burton, sr, who was also himself a legatee of peter hudson, sr.
this is also stated to have been james burton, sr's son, thomas burton, who also moved to laurens co, sc and who died there ca 1803.a laurens co, sc deed shows that land my charles harris, son of my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers, owned with james holley on raborn creek had been theformer property of thomas burton.
here is also thelunenburg co, va deed wherein my william harris, sr/ frances goode sold land to your william hudson.despite the fact, as i say, this deed was witnessed by christopher hudson, this is indicated to have been your william hudson or the william hudson, son of peter hudson, sr.
frankly, unless a dower renunciation was given or they were identified as my william harris, sr/ frances goode of finneywood and william harris/ judith hudson as william harris of woodpecker, it has not always been easy to determine which william harris is being referred to in these lunenburg co, va deeds and parish records.
meanwhile, although no dower renunciation is given, per this deed, the reason this is indicated to have been my william harris, sr/ frances goode, who sold this land to your william hudson, is that this land had belonged to henry thweatt and another lunenburg co, va deeds indicate that henry thweatt had sold this land to my william harris, sr/ frances goode rather than to william harris/ judith hudson.
also, these lunenburg co, va deeds indicate that it was my william harris, sr/ frances goode, who consistently bought and sold land on both sides of the middle fork of the middle bluestone creek there in lunenburg co, va.
here is the deed, first, wherein henry thweatt sold land there in lunenburg co, va to my william harris, sr/ frances goode:
lunenburg co, va deed book 4, page 206,1755, henry thweatt of dinwiddie co, va to william harris of lunenburg co, va for 25 pds and other divers good causes, 400 acres on both sides of the middle fork of the bluestone creek, being granted by patent to the said henry thweatt and bounded by william harris, new lines, miller.witnesses:robert wooding; william jones; william reade.
again, it was my william harris, sr/ frances goode, who had the agreement with william marable re the plantation "finneywood" in lunenburg co, va in 1746 and robert wooding married mary marable, daughter of william marable.
also robert wooding and william jones witnessed other deeds re my william harris, sr/ frances goode and, in fact, they also witnessed this lunenburg co, va deed wherein my william harris, sr/ frances goode sold land to the above william reade.
lunenburg co, va deed book 4, page 213, 1755, william harris of lunenburg to william reade of same for 160 pds, 900 acres in lunenburg on the head branches of the bluestone creek and bounded by new lines, william tibbs, william harris' old line, signed:william harriss.witnesses:robert wooding; thomas bedford; william jones.frances, wife of william harris, relinquished her right of dower.
here, then, is the lunenburg co, va deed wherein my william harris, sr/ frances goode sold to your william hudson or the william hudson, son of peter hudson, sr and 1/2 brother of judith hudson harris.
lunenburg co, va deed book 5, page 508, 1759, william harris of lunenburg co, va to william hudson of same for 30 pds, 100 acres in lunenburg on the lower side of the middle bluestone creek, being part of two tracts.the first tract was patented to henry thweatt on july 30, 1755 and the other tract was a patent to william harris on dec 15, 1749.the tract is bounded by william hunt, the patent line, william harrises lines.signed:william harris.witnesses:joel elam; christopher hudson.
the reason this william hudson is indicated to have been your william hudson or the william hudson, son of peter hudson, sr rather than christopher hudson's son, william hudson, even though christopher hudson witnessed this deed, is that christopher hudson's son william hudson is not indicated to have been born until ca 1745.in 1759, christopher hudson's son, william hudson would have only been about age 14.
also, per laurens co, sc deed, which i will also cite below, your william hudson, like mark moore, also an executor of william harris/ judith hudson's 1778 mecklenburg co, va will, also moved to laurens co, sc.
christopher hudson's son, william hudson is not indicated to have moved to laurens co, sc but instead moved to dickson co, tn and, per the info, died there in 1821.
i am not sure when or where your william hudson died??all i know, for sure, is that he is indicated to have still been in mecklenburg co, va in 1782 and by 1809 or earlier, he was in laurens co, sc.
again, as i said in the beginning, both my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson are shown to have been significantly involved with the will and estate of john wilborn from 1757-1762 in lunenburg co, va.
my william harris, sr/ frances goode and john camp are stated to have been the executors, although my william harris, sr/ frances goode is indicated to have served as the primary executor.
william harris/ judith hudson; richard hudson; and hugh mc kinney witnessed john wilborn's 1757 lunenburg co, va will.
john wilborn, himself, lived in this woodpecker creek area and, again, his son, thomas wilborn continued to live in this same woodpecker creek area where william harris/ judith hudson lived.
here is a lunenburg co, va deed showing that my william harris, sr/ frances goodeof finneywood was the executor of john wilborn'swill and estate and also that john wilborn's land was in this woodpecker creek area:
lunenburg co, va deed book 6, page 387, 1761, william harriss, finneywood, of lunenburg co, va to stephen willis of same.william harris, executor of john wilborne, deceased, agrees, per the order of john wilborne, deceased, to sell 50 acres on both sides of woodpecker creek and bounded by glasscock. signed:william harriss. selling price not given and no witnesses.
also, this deed that also states that john wilborn sold land to my william harris, sr/ frances goode but, oddly enough, there is no lunenburg co, va deed showing that john wilborn sold this land to my william harris, sr/ frances goode.
lunenburg co, va deed book 6, page 541, 1761, william harriss of lunenburg co, va, planter, to roger atkinson, merchant, of dinwiddie co, va for 100 pds, 400 acres on both sides of mitchell's fork of the bluestone creek being part of a larger patent of land to john wilborn on may 19, 1757 and deeded to william harriss and bounded by woodpecker creek.signed:wm harriss.no witnesses.
there are only a few lunenburg co, va deeds for john wilborn but this deed states that john wilborn's wife was also named judith.
lunenburg co, va deed book 4, page 514, 1757, john wilborne of lunenburg co, va to abraham talley of same for 20 pds, 200 acres on both sides of woodpecker creek and bounded by the mouth of a branch of stephen willis', john wilborne's old line.signed:john wilborn, his mark.no witnesses.judith, wife of john wilborn, relinquised her right of dower.
the parish records of lunenburg co, va indicated that john wilborn, wife, judith's daughter susannah wilborn was put under the guardianship of william harris and their son, thomas wilborn under the guardianship of william cox.
i do not know if this were my william harris, sr/ frances goode or william harris/ judith hudson, who became the guardian of susannah wilborne?
Lunenberg County VA Order Book 5 pg 35
March Court 1757 -Suzannah Wilborne, orphan of John Wilborne (deceased) bound to William Harris.
Ordered that the Church Wardens of Cumberland parish in this county do bind Thomas Wilborne, orphan of John Wilborne (deceased) to William Cox according to law.
however, again,as indicated by the mecklenburg co, va deeds, thomas wilborn continued toalso live in this woodpecker creek area and to be involved with the same individuals and families, who were involved there also with william harris/ judith hudson, including mark moore, who was also one of the executors of william harris/ judith hudson's 1778 mecklenburg co, va will.
again, mark moore also moved with his brother-in-law, peter ragsdale, also to this same little river of laurens co, sc where, as indicated, he had land adjacent either my mackerness goode, sr or jr.
mecklenburg co, va deed book 6, page 242, 1783, john chandler and wife, molley, to jeremiah lamkin both of mecklenburg co, va for 100 pds, 200 acres purchased of joseph dameron on the southside of woodpecker creek, running along jeremiah lamkin's line to mark moore and thomas wilborn, the head of buzzard branch to wagstaff's line, thence to norment, james lamkin.signed:john chandler; mary chandler.witnesses:william robertson; james lamkin.
next is indicated to be the mecklenburg co, va deed wherein mark moore sold his land there in mecklenburg co, va ere moving to laurens co, sc and, again, this deed also shows that his land was adjacacent thomas wilborn.
mecklenburg co, va deed book 6, page 462, 1784, mark moore of mecklenburg co, va to thomas spain of dinwiddie co, va for 500 pds, 220 acres in mecklenburg co, va bounded by the lower side of woodpecker creek joining hasting;thomas wilborne; jeremiah lamkin; wade; coleman; jefferies and the said lucas.signed:mark moore.witnesses:thomas berry; abram crowder; james harris; abram crowder (sic), jr (?).
james harris is indicated to have been one of the younger sons of william harris/ judith hudson and speaking of abraham crowder, per lunenburg co, va deed, my william harris, sr/ frances goode had also sold land to john smith of amelia co, va and abram crowder and benjamin ragsdale, father-in-law of mark moore, also witnessed this deed:
lunenburg co, va deed book 6, page 528, 1761, william harris of lunenburg to john smith of amelia co, va for 200 pds, 200 acres on both sides of the middle fork of the bluestone creek and bounded by new lines.signed:william harriss.witnesses:abram crowder; peter hamblin, his mark; benjamin ragadale.frances, wife of william harris, relinquished her right of dower.
these are, then, also the laurens co, sc deeds also showing that mark moore and his brother-in-law peter ragsdale alsomovedto this same little river area of laurens co, sc.
laurens co, sc deed book A, page 42, 1785, ratcliff jowell to mark moore for 250 pds currency, 150 acres in laurens co, sc on the beaverdam branch of little river.witnesses:joel burgess; peter ragsdale.
laurens co, sc deed book B, page 301, 1788, joel burgess and wife, eleanor, to richard shipp for 200 pds, 95 acres on the beaverdam creek of little river; 75 acres part of original grant in 1775 to acquilla hall and 20 acre grant in 1785 to joelburgess, bordered on mackerness goode, mark moore, acquilla hall, charles parrott, widow harvey.witnesses:lewis saxon, j.p.
so, here you have mark moore with land in this same little river of laurens co, sc which was adjacent either my mackerness goode, sr or jr and this was the same mark moore, who was one of the excecutors, along with your william hudson, who also moved to laurens co, sc, of william harris/ judith hudson's 1778 mecklenburg co, va.
then, per the following deed, this same joel burgess family re his son elijah burgess was also involved there in laurens co, sc with my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers and his brother-in-law, patrick cunningham.
laurens co, sc deed book F, page 441, 1798, william harriss to john cunningham for $85, spanish milled, 200 acres on duncans creek and little river, all my part of a 1796 survey to patrick cunningham and william harriss for 500 acre grant 2/ 6/ 1799 to john and robert cunningham and said william harriss.witnesses:elijah burgess; thomas redden.zech bailey, j.p. dower renunciation of wife, frances harriss.deed also says that my frances rodgers harris was the widow of my william harris, jr by 5/ 13/ 1799.my frances rodgers harris, daughter of my john rodgers, esq, also died in 1801 in laurens co, sc.
finally, here is the laurens co, sc deed showing that william hudson gave land in laurens co, sc and rutherford co, nc to his son-in-laws:james poole; jeremiah wilborn; and your william wilborn.
laurens co, sc deed book J, page 146, 1809, william hudson to son-in-law james poole and my daughter ursula hudson poole; my son-in-law william wilborn and daughter cary hudson wilborn; and my son-in-law jeremiah wilborn and daughter mary/ polly hudson wilborn of edgefield dist, sc a deed of gift:two tracts of land on the reedy river in laurens co, sc and bounded by allen mitchell, john taylor, john lyles, and thomas williamson; also another tract in rutherford co, nc on simms creek of broad river. witnesses:anderson crowder, joseph field. john lyon, j.q. edgefield dist, sc.
again, the info on james poole states that he married ursula hudson, daughter of william hudson, in 1782 in mecklenburg co, va.
this is a very long post and reply to you re your interest in your william hudson, whose daughter cary hudson married your william wilborn but, again, i wanted to not only let you know what i had learned in regard to your william hudson but how this all definitely relates to my interest also in my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson and whether my william harris, sr/ frances goode was the son, william, of william harris/ judith hudson.
again, john wilborn and the wilborns, as well as your william hudson, seem to hold part of the key to this.so, if you are able to learn more in regard to john wilborn and the wilborns or your william hudson, i would definitely appreciate your letting me know.
sincerely,
belva harris cauthen
