Nancy Wilber of Chenango Co, NY

Dear Penny & Rosemary,
Just today, I was looking around the Chenango County, NY 1850 census looking for likely husbands for some COLT daughters to have married. I found, in the town of Smyrna, the family of Benjamin Wilber aged 55, born MA. His wife [or at least the lady next on the census schedule] was Laura aged 57 born CT. If her age was really 57 and not 51 [you know how the top of the 5 and the top of the 7 get mixed together], she is a perfect fit for the Laura born 12/16/1793,in CT, daughter of Allen and Polly (Webster) Colt, who left CT and were in Chenango County, NY by the 1810 census, and remained there. In the family of Benjamin and Laura Wilber was a Nancy Wilber aged 17 in 1850, therefore born ca 1833. For me, this is just a hypothesis which I will work on, but the Laura Colt of my interest had a sister Nancy, so the fact that this Laura is the right age and born in the right state, and named a daughter "Nancy" is something to think about. For you, it is a Nancy Wilber born 1833, living in Chenango County NY, with a father named Benjamin, so fits 4 of your 5 "facts". Does anything you have fit with any of this?

Caroline Ruda
