Hi Carol,
I found your name through Google Search on my name. My grandfather was Johan Villehad Vilander, lived about 1880-1956 in the town Salo in southern Finland.
I know that some of his brothers changed names, but I do not think he is the one "Vilander" you are looking for. There are to my kowledge about 6 to 10 different families with the name Wilander in Finland and their descendants. Some of them are Finnish, some Swedish speaking families.
The village of Kaukola is located in southern Finland between Forssa and Karkkila towns. There may be other villages with the same name as well.
The name Wilander appears in Sweden and Germany, too. The law here actually allowed choosing free the first letter V or W.
Yet it would be interesting to know the origin of your family with the same name. If there is any connection between our families, I can send you our family tree back to 1600. If not, it may be useless for you - and difficult to read anyhow.
My family originates mostly from the region around Helsinki province in Finland. The name Wilander appeared around 1840 after the introduction of the name law in Finland.
I am aged 61, we are a family of 4 people. Kids are 34 years.
If you want know more, please send an e-mail to my home e-mail address:
Best regards,
Pauli Wilander
