Sherry, it's possible that Joseph is connected with the Wigner family that settled near what is now Smithville, WV, in the early 1800s. There's still a stream named for them in the area (Wigner Run). According to some data I've seen, there was a Joseph Wigner who was son of Daniel Wigner, who came to the Smithville area from Berks Co. PA, around 1805-ish. Some members of the family later moved across the Ohio River to what is now Gallia County, OH, and thence to other places. I'm descended from a branch line, descended from Daniel's son Jacob, that stayed in Virginia (later West Virginia) until around 1920.
