I looked in the Civil War records. I remember I researched one from Missouri and found he had been a captive of the rebels. It showed that he was released, but about 2 months before his release date he died. I know my guy made it to California. I show that he bought property like a fiend. I managed to look at the books of deeds and just listing the number representing each piece of property he bought filled nearly 3 pages 8 1/2 X 11. I found him working in Madison Co., MO in 1870 as a storekeeper. My pictures I have of him show a slender fellow. There is no oral history of him having served, but you are right it deserves a closer look.
