If one looks at the distribution by county of the earliest (19th century) English census it shows that the name of "Wiggin" is mostly regional and is about two-thirds located in the West England Midlands with the highest concentration in Staffordshire and Warwickshire.US census data, not suprisingly, shows the highest Wiggin name concentration in Maine, New Hampshire, and Mass. This doesn't prove anything of course, however, if Capt Thomas didn't drop an "s" from his surname, the highest probability is that the Wiggin family originated in the West Midlands.
