Substitutes were "hired" but not always paid.Often it was a brother or a neighbor who servce if someone found it inconvient to go themself. Some probably had large families or a business. They could also pay a "substitute fine" if they could not find someone.I believe that Robert Ferguson and Bezaliel Wier were neighbors after the War in the Danville area. One of my grandfather's died in 1771 and they both were at the auction sale.Look at a map here:http://dannysresearch.blogspot.com/2009/10/1833-grist-mill-1769-site-danville.htmlhttp://dannysresearch.blogspot.com/2009/10/1833-grist-mill-1769-site-danville.html
Robert Ferguson married a daughter (Michel) of Joshua Worsham. He lived east of this area after the War (and probably before, but he owned no property). Thanks for the info.
