Janet - Thanks for your perspective. Whatever the original name - I know they were in the Netherlands before Prussia and Russia (and Mennonite of course). I only know my personal lineage back to Chortitza and Molotschna in the late 18th early 19th.

So I'm still curious about the name origin, whether it is indeed Vienna, Austria? Or what it would have been in the Netherlands. My thinking for Veens - was that I know this is the dutch word for lowlands such as Friesland where many of Menno Simons followers came from.

I take from you email a Wiens in you genealogy married a de Veer or Sawatzky?
