Willis Widner (& varient spellings)
Can't stand this any longer -- must share, early Ohio, Widner, family findings NOW.All mentioned in my (comprehensive, fully documented including genetic diseases) book (hopefully ready for year end publication) under title of: "Fields of Clovers".
Gwen, Lee and all others connected through the Fr. Co., OH, 28 Jan 1836 marriage of Willis Widner (1809-1873)to Elizabeth Clover(1814-1888)-- this will benefit you.
Elizabeth's only sister was Catherine Clover (1812-1888) who married Gabriel Postles II (my direct line)--both being the first 2 Clover births of 8 children born to Peter Clover and wife: Christiana (Keller) Teters. Please remember my book for references and contact me direct with your findings and/or to make sure your family descent has already been included in the book.Happy hunting.
First off --Lee there was no extant 1820 Fr. Co., OH Fed. Census. But, not needed anyway. The Widners (& all varient spellings) were in Ross Co., OH. There is an 1820 printed full census availale from Ross County Genealogical Society, P O Box 6352, Chillicothe, OH 45601-6352. I purchased one a few years back, while up in Ohio. Then from the following sources found more: (1)"Pioneer Ohio Newspapers 1793-1810"; (2)"History of Fr. & Pickaway Co., OH",1880
(3) Ross Co., OH Marriages
(4) Still need to check "Deed Indexes" as some times property was transferred to children when no Will was present.
When Zachary Taylor Widner recalled he THOUGHT his grandfathers name was Joseph was a close recollection -- when actually it appears it was Jacob.
To back up.Willis' siblings appear to have been (1) Henry (d. 1830 Intestate Fr. Co.,OH)with admin's Knowleton Bailey (dau. Mary m. Zebulon Clover). Securities: Solomon Clover (his wife was Effie Widener) & Jos. Wood.Appraisers: Peter Clover & Wm. Stairwalt.
(2) Effie (Widener) Clover (1807 OH - 1875) who m. Solomon Clover, son of Henry & Catherine) and (3) Jane (Widener) Clover (1812 OH - 1894 who indicated in the 1880 Fed.Census that both her parents were born in VA) m. Solomon Clover, son of Joshua & Rachel WROTEN Clover.
This might be confusing but necessary to understand the sibling relationship in Fr. Co., OH.
"History of Fr. & Pickaway Co's, OH p.325" Jacob Widener who came fm. VA in 1802 and first settled below Chillicothe (Ross Co.,OH) died 1835.Had 2 dau's Eliz. d. 1878 ILL and Rebecca's hus. Jacob Engle d. 1835 leaving her still at the family homestead (this would have been ca. 1880 when the county history was printed.)
"State Centenial Hist. of Ross Co.,OH" p.336 Jacob Weider Kept a tavern as early as 1805, Ross co., Springfield Twp., OH, called "Barley Fork's".The plant had a still, brewery and a long bldg. of 9 rooms which was the hotel.
Under title of "Pioneer OH Newspapers" were the following;
9 Apr 1803 -- Jacob Widner
5 Mar 1805 -- Jacob Wider re: a stud horse at John Hugg's in Chillicothe ...
same date -- Jacob Wider re: a stud horse at John Neel's stable in New Lancaster.
9 Oct 1805 -- Jacob Wedener
Several more 1805 references to Jacob.
9 Oct 1806 -- Jacob Widar living on Kinichinic, Green Twp., Ross Co., wants to hire an English schoolmaster.
16 Jun & 10 July 1809 -- JAMES WIDNER
9 July 1810 -- JOHN WIDNER; has property on Dry Run for sale through Henry Massie.
TO CONTINUE .....
There are several more reference to the Widner's above but, contained within the same time frame.
1805 6 Oct -- Ross Co., OH; Christena Weider m. Dan'l Mussleman by Abraham Miller. He was connected to Jacob Weider, above, owner of the "Barley Forks" tavern and hotel.
1810 Ross Co., Union Twp., OH Tax List: JAMES WI(N)DER
1820 Fed Cen. Ross Co., Springfield Twp.,OH; P. 275-c: JACOB (1 male in Agriculture and GEORGE WIDER (1 male in Commerce)
1820 Fed Cen., Ross Co., Green Twp., OH; p.284-C:HENRY WIDER (1 male in Agriculture)
IN SUMMARY
We have Jacob (appears to have been two); Henry; George; John and James Widner along with Effie WIDNER Clover (who said, in the 1880 Fed Cen that both her parents were born in VA) and Jane WIDNER Clover.
THE STATE OF VIRGINIA IS THE KEY, HERE!
Please don't freak out on the many varient spellings because, apparently those in charge had a problem with this surname.
