The father of Alpheus Wickware b. 1749-54 was NOT Lebbeus

To whomever may be searching this line,

Recently, in searching for this info, I came across records from the Monongalia County WV Courts which is online. There are several books by Melba Pender Zinn which have transcribed these records for various years.

Anyway, in Vol 5 on page 297 are records (from May 1808) about Alpheus Wickware, John Wickware/Wickwire, and Samuel Wickware the son of Alpheus. Alpheus's father has been assumed, WRONGLY, to have been Lebbeus. In this passage of court records, Samuel Wickware (a lawyer himself) tells the court he knew nothing of the matter at hand (land sales between John Currant and Alpheus) but had found a receipt his GRANDFATHER'S papers he had come across a mention of the transaction in question (from 25 Nov 1778). It indicates that John Wickware paid an outstanding balance for Alpheus Wickware.

It is well known that Samuel was the son of Alpheus Wickware and Sallie Frazier and born in Oct. 1787 in WV. This court action is the first known statement about who Samuel's grandfather is: John Wickware/Wickwire.

John is in land records from about 1763 and is shown to have owned land very near the Maryland border. There has been some research that shows Alpheus and Sallie had at least one of their sons born in Maryland in 1795.

I just thought some researchers might like to have this issue aired and to know the Wickware line that moved on to KY and later TX and points west...WAS NOT DESCENDED FROM LEBBEUS. (I have long held this as a theory, because none of the southern and western line continued the naming of ANY sons Lebbeus!)

Now we will need to find WHICH John Wickware/Wickwire was Alpheus's father!!! Wish Samuel had been able to tell us more!

Regards,
Jan Hart
