Wayne,
Joseph Wickes of Kent Island was probably a Puritan. As I recall Capt. Wickes became Col. Wickes so this would preclude the designation being naval in nature. He did apparently own a shipworks on the island and it would not have been unreasonable for him to a ship's Captain though that is never mentioned in the the Maryland Archives.Wickes was also a jurist/judge etc. If he had a been a Quaker he would not have been able to be sworn in because Quakers could not swear an oath.
You might consider posting info on the Weeks forum as well since his name was spelled a number of different ways in Maryland and VA records.
It appears that Hynson/Hinson, Ringgold and Joseph Wickes/Weekes all migrated from the IoW region of VA about the same time, 1650, along with many other Puritans because of religious reasons. About the same time a Walter Weekes who was living on Kent Island since at least 1642 migrated to the Northern Neck of VA.My take is that Walter was a Catholic and Joseph was a Puritan and therefore not related....
Walter Weeks
