Our Darlings

Written in memory of Bertie, Emma and Jennie Dutcher, who died in January 1877.

Three of our darlings were called away
To the distant shore of the better land.
They went when the trees looked lone and gray,
And the earth was covered with a snowy band.
Two at one time encoffined lay,
Our hearts nigh broke on that dreary day!

The first that went was Bertie dear,
With golden hair and eyes so blue;
Of the cold, dark tomb he had no fear.
He is now among the treasured few,
For Christ to the disciples said,
"Let little children to me be led."

The next that left our household throng
Was Emma, with her dark brown hair,
And ere she'd been enshrouded long,
Mild-eyed Jennie, with face so fair,
Called from her couch where she suffereing lay,
"Wait, sister Emma! wait for me!
From this cold earth I'll soon be free."

Each watched her suffering with an aching heart,
Her pains we'd soothe that she might rest;
We knew that ere long with her we'd part,
In her burial robe she'd soon be dressed,
Sister Emma had not long to wait,
Together they passed through the pearly gate.

Those now cold forms we sadly miss,
That used to flit from room to room;
We miss the laugh and good-night kiss.
We've lain them away in the silent tomb.
Yes, we've tenderly lain them away to rest,
But their souls have flown to their Saviour's breast.

When we are called from this world of care,
To the sought-for shore of the better land,
Two white-robed maidens will meet us there;
And two little brothers, hand in hand,
Will stand on the shore to watch us in,
When we have sailed from this world of sin.
