Michael & Bridget (LAWLER) DOWNS ca 1900

Michael DOWNS died on Oct 30, 1902, in Winnebago County, WI. His wife, the former Bridget LAWLER, and their daughter, Ella, moved to St. Paul, MN, the following year. Both Michael and Bridget were born in Ireland. A David DOWNS also appeared in St. Paul the same year (in 1903), living in the home of Michael's son, John. He lived with John for two years, according to the city directories. We do not know for certain what his relationship was to John, but think he may have been a brother, a cousin, or an uncle to John (he was not John's son). Michael's son, Thomas, and his daughter, Mary, also lived in St. Paul as adults.

It is believed that Michael's family lived from 1865 or so until 1902 in the Town of Nepeuskun, where he farmed. One of his sons, Daniel DOWNS, remained in Wisconsin, living at one time in Oshkosh, WI, and later moving to Milwaukee.

Daniel's wife was Annie, last name unknown. They had a son, Donald DOWNS, born in March of 1900. Daniel may have had grandsons, James and Donald, born circa 1930, who lived in Milwaukee at some time during their childhood. The 1900 census lists Dan and Annie living at 261 Grand Avenue, Oshkosh, WI.

Is there anyone still living in Nepeuskun Town or Winnebago County who would be able to give us any information about this family? We are interested in finding descendants, as well as learning more about the origin in Ireland of both Michael DOWNS and Bridget LAWLER. Are there any old obituaries available from newspapers of that era?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jeanne Downs
