In his HISTORY OF WAUSHARA COUNTY (1932), George P. Sorenson devotes several pages to the details of this incident. It ends with Cartwright's body being dragged behind a sleigh to his home, where it was thrown into his house in front of his horror-stricken wife and children. This may or may not be the source of the story you have from the Plainfield paper, but if you would like a copy, send me your mailing address (handrich@triver.com) and I will be glad to forward a copy. As is the case with all such early incidents, the facts may have changed over time, to suit the purposes of the writer, and I'll leave it to you to judge the accuracy of the account.
