Summit Questions????
Trying to tie down one gg-grandfather. His name was John SOMMERVILLE. He lived in Oconomowoc. He moved to Oconomowoc, in the 1840's from Troy, New York. He was married to a Janet (?), and they had four children with all four born in New York (Mary, Agnes, John, William) and one child born in Wisconsin, Janet. The 1860 federal census shows them still in Oconomowoc, his wife Janet lists her age as 45. The date on the census is June 20, 1860. Now things det very intresting. There is a document thaty shows John marrying a Sophia ZABLE on October 12, 1860. What happened to Janmet? There never has been a death notice, obituary or gravestone found for her. She seeems to have just dropped off the screen. Sophia appears to have been married, at least she had at least one child before marrying John. Sophia can not be found prior to marrying John. Now the questions come: Either Janet died or the marrige was disolved. If she died why no record of it has nothing been found? If she and John divorced, where is that record? There must be sometype of recprd generated? Why cant we find anf record of Sophia (or her known daughter Augusta) prior to her wedding to John?
The 1865 Minnesota State census shows that the family has moved th Bergan. McCloud, Minnesota. So sometime between their marrige on October 12, 1860 and the date of the Minnesota State census (undated) they moved from Wisconsin to Minnesota.
So the questions are:
10 If Janet died, why cant we find anything at all?
2) What type of record would there be if Janet was divorced?
3) Was Sophia married before? Why cant we fibd her
John and Sophia were married by a Reverend Enos MONTAGUE in Summit. From research we know that Rev MONTAGUE was Presbyterian. This fits as a lot of the Scots emmigrants were Presbyterian. From research, we have found that Presbyterian services around that time (1860) were held in an old school house in Summit. The services were Presbyterian / Congregational. The servicers at a later date moved, unknown to where. Question, who would we contact from church records since most records remain at the local church and in this case the church is no more?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Bob
