Deacon Paul Peck Line from CT -> Waukesha Co.
I have a little info on the Pecks of Waukesha county who descend from Deacon Paul Peck. Most of what little I have is from internet sources, but i verified some vital info on during a trip to Hartford. I've also got images of census records back to 1790.An extract from my ahnantafel is below.
I am stumped on Romanta Peck, father of Hazen, who was my 3rd great grandfather. What i need to know is how many wives did Romanta Peck have and which was definitely the mother of Hazen and his siblings?I have polly durgin so far, but I know Romanta married a Clarissa by the 1850 census and in the biographical sketches of Muskego, Hazen's mother is a Sarah (is Polly a nickname for this Sarah?) In fact, any info on Romanta would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Notes for Samuel Peck:
Samuel lived with Deacon Paul until his death in 1695.In Deacon Paul's will, he was responsible for paying for his grandmother Martha's support.Martha died in 1699, and Samuel married Abigail Collier two years later in 1701. They settled in Middletown (now Berlin), CT in 1707 after after Samuel sold the house and land he inherited from his grandfather, Deacon Paul, and bought the Andrew Belshurs farmhouse and 200 acres in Middletown.
According to Stephen Peck, there is a marker at Christian Lane Cemetery listing Samuel Peck as one of the original founders of the "Great Swamp Society" (Berlin was called the "Great Swamp Village").At the time that Samuel and his family lived there, there were 13 other families.A 14' high stockade protected the fort and settlers' cabins from the Indians.
** Stephen Peck notes:
"Some authors, including Ira Peck and Savage have attributed this Samuel to a son Samuel of Deacon Paul. Jacobus refers to this latter Samuel as a "fictional" or "phantom" Samuel and has proven that Deacon Paul had no such son. The confusion may have been caused by Talcott's Memorial History of Hartford County which identified a Samuel in West Hartford who had a wife Elizabeth and a son Samuel."

7680.Deacon Paul Peck, born Bef. 1620 in Essex County or Elitsley, Cambridgeshire, England; died January 1696 in Hartford, Hartford, CT.He was the son of 15360. Edward O. Peck and 15361. Grace Green. He married 7681. Martha Hale 1638 in Hartford, Hartford, CT.
7681.Martha Hale, born December 16, 1618 in Watton-at-Stone, England; died March 07, 1699 in Hartford, Hartford, CT.She was the daughter of 15362. John Hale and 15363. Martha Kirby.
Notes for Deacon Paul Peck:
There's a lot of confusion about Deacon Paul's origins.About the only thing agreed on is that he was born before 1620 somewhere in England (Essex or Eltisley in Cambridgeshire are popular guesses), probably the son of Edward O. Peck and Grace Green, and he emigrated to Boston in 1634-1635.The ship is listed as the "Defence" in some accounts, but others contest it, since an unrelated or related Richard Peck (possible brother?) could have been on that ship instead. Still others say that Richard was on the Defence with Paul.
per Stephen Peck:
" Deacon Paul remained in Boston and vicinity until June 1636 when he moved to Hartford, CT with Reverend Thomas Hooker and 110 friends to form the 1st Congregational Church. It is said that they drove 160 head of cattle and transported themselves by foot over the rugged 100 miles of terrain between Boston and Hartford. The land was secured by a deed issued by Sunckquasson, then chief of the Pequot Indians at the time. There he was made deacon of the Congregationalist Church from 1681 until his death in 1695. He was also the first preacher in Weathersfield, CT. Deacon Paul, his son Paul and his grandson Paul are listed in the Litchfield Genealogy Register, but it is believed that only Paul III. moved to Litchfield, Litchfield, Litchfield, CT sometime after 1686 since Paul Jr's son William is not listed as being born in that town.
The Peck residence is said to be on Lot 48 of the original township what is now Washington Street, not far from Trinity College and the State Capitol. The Peck homelot is now the site of the Connecticut Supreme Court and the Connecticut State Library. Porter's Map of Hartford in 1640 shows his lot being the second lot southerly of the intersection of the Road from George Steel to the Great Swamp and the Road to Thomas Richmond's. He also purchased land from Seth Grant in 1651.
He was a Hartford "Proprietor" by "courtesie of the Town" in 1639; his home lot was on the Road from George Steele's to the Great Swamp"; Surveyor of Highways 1658, 1665; townsman 1661, 1668. He was also a Chimney Viewer in 1667, another Town-appointed post which inspected chimneys for structural soundness and fire safety. Land records in Hartford identify Paul Peck as one of the founders and is among "... such inhabitants as were granted lots to have only at the Town's courtesie with liberty to fetch wood and keep cows and swine by proportion to the common."
There is much published about the composition of Deacon Paul's family, with some authors attributing a son Samuel to him. Jacobus' 1932 article in The American Genealogist seems to definitively contradict the assertions of Savage and Ira Peck that Deacon Paul had a son Samuel, whose son Samuel is in the direct line of this researcher. Jacobus' analysis seems to corroborate the findings contained in the Hartford Town History. Jacobus' findings seem to be definitive; and, by Ira Peck's own admission in the introduction to Deacon Paul's genealogy, the 1868 genealogy by him was based on incomplete information, perhaps anecdotal information that has now proven to be inaccurate.
He died with an estate valued at 536 pounds, 5 schillings. His will was probated and recorded in Court Records, Page 94, January 15, 1695/96."
Headstones for Deacon Paul and Martha no longer exist, butthere is a Memorial Monument placed in 1986 in the Ancient Burying Ground, honoring Hartford's original founders--including Deacon Paul Peck.
