During the mid-1800's, several other counties were formed from the larger, original "Portage County," and the City of Portage eventually became the county seat of Columbia County.

To the extent that they were made and preserved, records of births, marriages, and deaths in and around Portage (including those from 1872) would be available from the Columbia County Register of Deeds Office, P.O. Box 177, Portage, WI 53901-0177; 608/742-2191.
