U.S. States: Wisconsin: Oconto County
Hello, Kathy. Thanks for responding to my post on the Sharrows. The Sharrows are definitely French Canadian in origin. Thanks to Barb Sprik we know that "Sharrow" is one Americanization of the French Charon or Charron. As you know, many 19th century immigrants Americanized their surnames or simply chose well-known American surnames to substitute for their original surnames. There is probably more than one reason for this practice. If one immigrated via Ellis Island, he or she could end up with whatever the immigration agent understood or decided to put down. I am not sure that is the case with other ports of entry.
Anton and Virginia Sharrow would have been born between 1860 and 1865 based on when they started having children. (1885)
In case you are interested, there is a photo of them on my website at http://www.spanishforum.com/ on the first Lincoln Highway page.
