Hi!
Just a note on John Lansing and Frances in Wilkin county census that you mention...
"At the same time.. 1885 Minnesota state census Wilkin Co
John Lansing, 28, b.Wi
Frances, 21, b. Iowa
living next to Edward Merrick, b. Wi and Frank Merrick b.Wi"
This John Lansing was my great uncle (my grandmother, Helen's brother). John had a brother, Francis, who was 5 years younger who probably lived and farmed with him. Francis died in 1863.
That may be another interesting piece of the puzzle.
