RE: name changes
Many family names were change simply to adapt to the American way of spelling. In other words - trying to blend into American life. Also, census takers were not that great at spelling foreign names. So, they wrote what the "ear" heard thus appearing to change the name. Many immigrants could not rear or write so they could not verify the correctness of what the census taker wrote.
