Karen,

I was able to find Alfred in 1880 in MItchell Co, IA, indexed as "Gluson". He is living with a family and listed as their "servant". Like you I was unable to find him before this, even checking every spelling I could think of or searching by first name. It's possible that he was either orphaned early or his family went back into Canada for a short time. As Thomas Kerwin suggested, you would be better off to try the death certificate first, or even an obituary, since birth records weren't reliably kept in many states in the 1860's.

One thing that was interesting is this entry in the 1860 IA state census:
Taken June 1860 in Richfield, Mitchell, IA
Merinas Sason 32 male teamster b. Upper Canada
Jane Sason 33 female Upper Canada
Alfred Sason 3mos Wisconsin

I couldn't find this family in 1870.

Nancy
