There are several Civil War sites that will give a regimental history. If you can retrace his steps you may be able to narrow down a battle or skirmish site and then look in that area. I know there are some sites that deal with battles in Missouri too. Try "Missouri in the Civil War" or similar search phrase, and try GewWeb/USGenWeb for county sites. There is detailed information on Newton Co, MO, for example, including military reports. I had a great grandfather who died at a military hospital in Ft Smith, Ark and never have been able to locate his burial site. Someone answering a query pointed out that due to disease and heavy casualties, unfortunately some were buried as quickly as possible, and we all know there were places where mass burials were necessary...

Also try the National Cem. if you are able to narrow a place of death down.

Good luck, I hope you find him!
