Jacob D. Steiner m Amanda Korte abt 1891, Lomira, Dodge Co, WI
What an interesting surname, KORTE is.
I have an ancestor, Jacob D. STEINER who married an Amanda CORTE. He was born abt.1860/61 (estimated from 1880 U.S. census, Lomira, Dodge county, WI, in which he was listed as age 19; 1910 U.S. census in SD, Grant county, Bigstone City - age 48, enumerated 20 Apr 1910; In 1920 he was 48 - enum. 24 Jan, in 1930, 58 - enum 9 Apr 1920 - enum 9 Apr). If I had to wager, I'd say he was born in 1861, unless he had been born between Jan 1 and Jan 23 1862.
Amanda may have been among the children ofthe following family found in the 1880 Census, Lomira, Dodge county, WI:
CORTTE family - daughter Amanda, below, later married Jacob D. Steiner, son of Johann B. and Agnes Kaflisch
CENSUS: 1880;Lomira, Dodge, Wisconsin; FHL Film 1255423,NA Film T9-1423, p 293D;
John CORTTE, head of household, married, M, W, 45, b in Prussia, farmer, both parents b in Prussia;
Dora CORTTE, wife, married, F, W, 35, b in Bavaria, keeping house, both parents b in Bavaria;
Martha CORTTE, dau, F, W, 16, b in WI (all children), work at home, father b in Prussia - mother in Bavaria (aswith all children, below);
Wilhelm CORTTE, son, M, W, 14, work at home;
Herman CORTTE, son, M, W, 11, at school;
Amanda CORTTE, dau, single,F, W, 10, at school;
George CORTTE, son, single, M, W, 7, at school;
Adolph CORTTE, son, single, M, W, 2, b in WI.
Note that Amanda, the fourth of six children born to John and Dora Cortte, was age 10, in 1880, which would have made her about 40 in 1910 census, 50 in 1920, and 60 in 1930. The ages of Jacob D. Steiner's wife, Amanda were:
39 in 1910,49 in 1920, 59 in 1930. Good enough for me; much too much would be the coincidence that she would have been a young girl of 10 living very near a Jacob D. Steiner in 1880 at Lomira, WI; then show up married to a Jacob D. Steiner, and found with a Jacob D. Steiner in census records of South Dakota.
Also, living just next door to the Jacob D. and Amanda Steiner family in the 1920 Census in Big Stone City, Grant County in the 1920 census was the family of a John E. Korte, age 54, b in MN, his wife, Emma or Erma M., age 46,and children:Grace L, age 24; Earl M, age 23, Myrtle C or L, age 21; Vera E, age 17; Elmer J., age 14; Orie L. age 10, all born in SD. Their father John E. was born in WI, their mother Erma was born in MN.
I have searched long enough for just these two to find Korte spelled Kortte, Korte, Corte, Cortte. And, I'd guess that if I expanded the search it would have other variant spellings. It's about as tough as my Royston line for alternate spellings.
Enough blabber, I'd love to hear from anyone with more detailed lineages on thes families, both Korte and Steiner. Email me directly at [email protected] if you have any help, or post here and I'll get notified since I did check the little box to be notified whenever someone replies to my message.
Thanks, much and best wishes on your research. I'll keep and family with this name and post more later due to my interest since Jacob D. Steiner is my first cousin, twice removed.
