Your brother in law is my 6th cousin or so. All the Crawford County Smethursts are the same family, an extended group of which moved to the US from Lancashire before the Civil War. Our mutual ancestors Thomas and Eliz Smethurst were wed 20 March 1798 at Bolton Le Moors, Lancs.

I would be happy to exchange more individualized info. I live in Seattle.
