My grandmother Hattie Gilbert was born 9/14/1879 to Alice Mary Chase - a schoolteacher in the Chippewa Falls area. Story is that her lover, a man by the name of Gilbert, was killed before Hattie's birth and Alice returned to the home of her mother, Margaret Jeanette Reid Chase (dad Ezra Chase died 1871) for Hattie to be born.
The Chase family lived in the Moundsville area at the time. I also have an obit from 1919 on a Caferna Gilbert - mom was Etta Gilbert - this may be a niece or Etta a sister. Grandma had this tucked in her Bible. No one knew about Hattie's under the blanket birth until in the 1930's. No one asked about her dad until after Hattie's death in the 1940's. The Gilbert boy was reported to be a logger and had an accident
as a logger.
