Buffalo County-Early History 1854-1855 Settlers

Farms were cleared and fields prepared for crops and the county settled repidly in 1855. Settlers making their settlements were poor at this time, but now are counted among the most properoous.Towns of Maxville,Canton, Naples, Gilmanton, and Alma were settled in 1855. Joseph Richard settled in town of Alma early Spring on Sec. 25 Town 22, Range 18. He was followed during the summer of tthe same year by Ulrich Wald, on sec 31; Jacob Meter, sec 31; Peter Margreth, Sec 32, and Casper Grob,constructing cabins and getting fields ready for Spring planting in 1856.
William Bean, John Lafferty, George King, Abbott Read and Michael Aaron settled in the town of Maxville; H.P. , L.D.,and P.Farrington,William VanWaters, Thomas Glasspool and H. Brown became settles of Naples. What is now know as "Tuttle Farm" within the present limits of Canton....this was in 1881. They settled on Sec 2 which was occupied and improved by a man called Quackenbos, and in August, Samuel Gilman and his four sons, Frank, Edson,Andrew and Daniel , took up land in Sections 8 and 17, in the town of Gilmanton, in what is now know as Gilman's Valley and began to build cabins and get hay to winter their stock. Winter was spent getting out rails for fencing. Land was broken and crops were planted the folowing Spring. Philo Englesby also settled in this town in Autumn 1855 on Sec 7, now know as Allen's Valley. Regards, amp
