Alfred Whymark and family - Suffolk and Portsmouth
Posted by: Malcolm Saunders (ID *****7939) Date: December 13, 2002 at 01:18:30

I am looking for any information on Alfred Whymark born in 1839 in Suffolk. He later moved to Portsmouth where he ran the Globe beer shop and lodging house in Oyster Street.

As a young man he lost both hands. I don't know how, but it may have been an accident with farm machinery in Suffolk. Despite having hooks in place of hands he seems to have been a successful landlord for many years until he died in Hampshire on 14 July 1923.

I don't know who his parents were, but they may have been John Whymark and Mary Smith. I think that Mary may have been a publican in Suffolk when she was widowed, but this is not at all sure.

Alfred's children were:
John Frederick (my mother-in-law's father)
Alfred Walter
Mary
Eliza Jane
Harriet H
Ellen L
Elizabeth
Louisa (Lilla)

All of the children will have grown up in Portsmouth.

Alfred was married to Mary Ann Matthews who originated from St. Kiverne in Cornwall.

I would appreciate any information at all on this family.

Thanks and regards

Malcolm Saunders
