Brenda, hi, I have the following from the 1900 census:

1900 Federal Census, Texas, Nocona, Montague Co (pronounced "mon-taig" with hard G):
Vowell, Geo. W., 1817/age 83, NC-NC-NC, Wid, Farmer
_____, Walter? E., Sept 1879/20, TX-MO-TX, Single, Farm Laborer, Son (I believe this is a grandson--LM)
Cadell, Lucinda E., July 1838/61, TN-NC-TN, Wid, Children 1/0, Dau
Embree, Sarah E., Dec 1840/59, MO-NC-TN, Wid, Children 2/1, Dau

I recently contacted a member of the Cooke Co Genealogical Society who also gave the burial info from Union Hill. She checked the book listing and did not find her name either, although she said there was an obituary or death notice on 10 November 1896 for a "Mrs. W. J. Vowell" (the W may have been an error) in one of the local newspapers. I will need to go to Gainesville and look at this in the microfilm. Another Vowell researcher gave the death date of Jane as 8 November 1896, and said that she has George buried in Longbranch Cemetery in Montague County. I don't have an exact birthdate for Jane, only that she appears to have been born between 1813-1814 in Tennessee.

As to Jane's parents/family, my current theory (one that I'm trying hard to prove or disprove) is that Jane was a sister to Pleasant Whitworth who married Eupha Emaline Young, and that she had at least the following other siblings: Miranda, Mary, and Jacob. The other part of my theory is that their parents were James and Sarah Whitworth, both born in Virginia. Please email me at so that we can compare notes on this.
