Whitty, Robert P. > REEDSBURG - Robert
Peter Whitty, age 84, of Reedsburg, passed away Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at the Sauk County Healthcare Center after a lingering illness. He was born on May 2, 1920, to Francis and Agnes (Garrigan) Whitty, and raised on the family dairy farm in Winfield township. After graduating from UW-Madison in 1942, with a degree in agricultural education, Bob married Virginia Marron on June 6, 1942. He was a fighter pilot in the Army Air Corps in World War II, serving with the 414th Fighter Group in the Pacific Theater. After his military service, Bob taught agriculture for 10 years at Adams-Friendship high school before returning to operate the family farm in 1956. His UW education had a profound impact on Bob, as an early advocate of integrating soil and water conservation practices on the farm. He also installed Sauk County's first milking parlor and free-stall housing system for his herd. In 1990, the UW College of Agricultural and Life Sciences awarded him their honorary recognition award for his contributions to agriculture. Bob also served on the Reedsburg School Board for 25 years, 17 of them as its president. An avid reader and UW sports fan, Bob was also active in the local V.F.W., American Legion, Kiwanis, the Sauk County Holstein Association, and the Reedsburg Farmers Warehouse Cooperative. Bob is survived by his wife, Virginia; and six children, Richard (Monica) Whitty of Dayton, Ohio, Barbara (David) Davis of Spencerville, Ohio, Mary Jane Whitty of Mukwonago, Michael (Diane) Whitty of Port Washington, Suzanne Whitty of Mukwonago and Gerry (Julia) Whitty of Fort Atkinson. He is survived by 10 grandchildren including, Mark and Michelle Davis, Erin and Colleen Whitty, Megan, Katie and Patrick Whitty, and Robert, Peter and Rebecca Whitty. He is also survived by a sister, Virginia (George) Knight of Fox Point. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gerald; and a sister, Eileen Forman. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at 11:30 a.m. at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH, Reedsburg, with Father Thomas Monaghan presiding. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at the FARBER FUNERAL HOME, Reedsburg. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made directly to the family, to establish a Robert P. Whitty Scholarship at Reedsburg High School for students pursuing secondary education in the field of agriculture.
