Just to help, in a very general way.Given names of themselves are not proof of connection. The dates tie things down a bit.The reason maybe that Joseph is listed aa a lodger is probably because he is the wrong generation or is an other than direct connection to either the man or his wife. Sometimes you can find a child living with a family which is no connection that you can see to anyone in the family. Also, in some generations did not move away from the place they were born all their lives. Other times they moved almost continually - probably to find work. Read English history of the time you are searching and see what was going on.
For instance, The Whittles who went to Northern Ireland (Ulster) may have done so because Cromwell was offering incentives to get English Protestants to move to Ireland - some to change Catholic Ireland to Protestantism. We know how that has gone.My family came supposedly because of the Revolution of 1798. In British history, the Kings of England were very interested in solidifying all of the islands to their rule. The Scots fought this king and that for many generations until 1707 when by treaty, Scotland accepted the rule of James VI (of Scotland) or James I of England.
