The Richard Whittington who left a nuncupative will on December 9, 1760 in Edgecombe County, NC (proven March Term, 1761) only mentioned his youngest son Richard. County records further suggest that William Whittington and Faddy Whittington were perhaps also his sons.
The younger Richard Whittington was born about 1745-1750 in Edgecombe County, NC and died December 18, 1820 in Johnston County, NC. His will was devised in Johnston County on October 30, 1819 and proven on May 30, 1821. Richard's wife (and the mother of his children) was Olive Stephenson (b. about 1750-1755 Southampton County, VA, d. October 12/29, 1814 Johnston County, NC), the daughter of Solomon Stephenson, Sr. (ca. 1715/20 - 1794) of Johnston County, NC by his second wife Sarah. After Olive's death, Richard Whittington married Nancy, who is mentioned in his 1819 will.
The elder Richard Whittington (d. 1760) appears in the land records of Edgecombe Precinct in North Carolina as early as 1732, and acquired his first land there by 1739. Richard Whittington (d. 1760)'s wife was Mary, and she together with son William Whittington and his wife Mary conveyed land in Edgecombe County, NC to Nathan Dortch on January 1, 1767.
John Whittington's son Richard is listed in the Albemarle Parish Register of Surry/Sussex County, VA as being born in the 1740s. He is much too late to be identical with the Richard Whittington (d. 1760) of Edgecombe County, NC, who was already an adult land owner by that time. Indeed, Richard Whittington of Edgecombe County, NC would have been roughly contemporary with John Whittington.
