Camp Alabama Texas August the 10th 1846
Dear Brother it is with great pleasure That I take my pen in hand to inform that I am still living though I am very unwell at this time yet I am not as low as I have been I and Andrew and william Runyon have all had the measles but william and Andrew are gerring over them and I am mending as fast as could be expected John Hendrick has had the fever about five weeks and is now verry low no I do not think he will ever recover there has been and is now a good deal of sickness in camp and several deaths though none in our Company yet but there is two or three doubtful Cases in the Company there are a good many that have got and are still getting discharges and some are going home on furlows but there is no one gone out of our Coompany yet we are now on the Rio grande about ten miles from the mouth where will remain until the 20th then we are going to march up the rio Grande about 100 miles where they say we will have good water and more timber the place is called Carmarge they say we will march from there to Monteray where we will have a fight so said but how true it is I cannot tell for we cannot here the truth at no time
