Go to the states bordering Tennessee--remember that the State of Franklin was once part of Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia (I believe), it could be that he was in one of those states instead. (I am not sure about the Virginia part nor do I remember when the State of Franklin existed, but it is worth a try. HIstory of the Lost State of Franklin bySamuel Cole Williams is a good book to read and use as a research tool for that era.
