Portraits of Mr. & Mrs. Bernard Whittemore of Peterborough, NH, c. 1832
The online catalog of the February 21, 2009, auction at Cobbs Auctioneers in Peterborough, NH, illustrated a pair of portraits of Bernard & Jane Holmes Whittemore of Peterborough, NY, painted c. 1832.
The catalog gave this information about the portraits that eventually sold for $1150:
"Pair Of Portraits Of Bernard & Jane Holmes Whittemore Of Peterborough, NH, oil on canvas, unsigned, probably done circa 1830-32 by an itinerant artist, 28" x 24", appears to have the original gilded frames, (some gold over paint), otherwise in good condition. Provenance: Full family descending history available, along with a write-up by Michele M. Stahl of the Peterborough Historical Society.
Estimate $3,000-5,000"
I have saved the pictures of these portraits from the internet files and would be happy to send them freely by email to any Whittemore family researchers who can use them. Someone in the family ought to have them--they are too good to be unknown by the family. They may not have a lot of genealogical importance but they certainly do have a lot of family importance to the descendants of this couple.
My email address may be found by clicking on my underlined name above. Please contact me directly by email rather than leave a message on this Whittemore Genforum website that I might not see.
If they were portraits of a Pease family couple in my line, I'd certainly hope someone would do the same for me.
