Does anyone know of a connection between the Calvert, Whittemore and Thompson families of Spartanburg District, South Carolina in the late 18th and early 19th centuries?
John Whittemore married Rachel Thompson, the daughter of John Thompson, whose will was probated Mecklenburg Co., VA in 1769. This John Whittemore is believed to have been the same John Whittemore with wife Rachel who settled in Spartanburg District, SC. He appears in the 1800 Spartanburg Census, but not that of 1810. Had he died or left the area?
John and Rachel Whittemore are believed to have been the parents of, among others, Obediah and Raleigh Whittemore. Raleigh/Rolly/Roll, etc., Whittemore appears in Spartanburg census returns along with Raleigh “Rolly” Calvert and his brother Spencer Calvert. (The families of Raleigh Whittemore and Raleigh Calvert are connected in the next generation through marriages with Osheal family members.)
Raleigh Whittemore had sons Spencer, Hugh and James A. Whittemore and perhaps others. Along with these sons he moved to Hall County, GA and appears in the 1830 Census there.
The use of the unusual names of Raleigh (Rolly, etc.), Spencer and Obediah in both the Calvert and Whittemore families of the area may have been because of a family connection. If so, what is the connection?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Please contact directly: Newgate2000@aol.com.
