Whitner is one of the three common spellings of the Wittner/Witner family of Berks Co. PA. I believe it is mostly used by that branch that located in Reading, PA during the mid 1800s. The offspring were very successful professional people.
My direct line favored the Witner spelling but my great Uncle adopted the double "T" as did cousins in South Bend, IN to distinguish the family from the many other Witners from Summit Co. OH and PA who had moved there before.
