I have traced my family back to John Wedingman (Weedingman on one census) He was born in 1730 and died in 1799 in Newberry district, SC. He married a woman named Barbara (no last name) in 1750. They had five children, Peter whitman, Christopher Whitman, David, Christian, and John all Whitman.
Unsure of why the name change. I do know they were farmers.
