Thanks to the efforts and good hunting of Patricia Wood on the VT Genforum I now have added three more generations to my Whitman line and, Lo and Behold, it does not lead to Long Island, but right back to MA.
William Green Whitman was born in 1819 or 20 in Vermont. He married Laura Jane Finch b. 1824 in NY. William had at least one brother, James D. Whitman, b. 1 NOV 1824 also in VT. James died 31 JAN 1864 in Niles, MI.
This is significant because William's son, Dr. Martin Ira Whitman married Lydia Alice Barnum Clark on 29 SEP 1863 in Niles, MI. This is a fact that has been known and it indicates that the whole family, or a good portion of it, was all in Niles, Michigan around 1863 and 64.
Anyway, William and James' parents turn out to be Luther Whitman, b. 9 FEB 1795 in Poughkeepsie, NY, d. 8 MAR 1864 in Mishawaka, IN, and Sally Green, b. 21 May 1799. Luther's parents were Daniel Whitman, b. 16 JUL 1745 in MA, and Martha Cole, b. 13 OCT 1753 in Westmorland, NH.
So, I have the Whitman line ever closer to John Whitman of Weymouth who arrived in 1635.
Anyone who has the facts on the early Whitman generations, your help is needed. I have never seen Charles Henry Farnam's book on the genealogy of John, but it was written in 1889, so it would doubtless contain the missing generations. Thanks to anyone who can help.
