James Whitlock had at least two siblings in California, maybe he was visiting one of them when he sent the postcard in 1922. Where did your info come from that stated James "Jim" was dead before 1922?
James' brother William Alexander Whitlock is in the census in LA in 1910 and 1920; died there in 1929. James's sister Lisetta Adeline (Whitlock) Fouts was in Sonoma CA from the 1900 through 1930 census. She died in Sonoma CA 27 Dec 1940. According to her CA death record her father's surname is Whitlock, and her mother's maiden name is Lemon. She was the wife of Jacob G. Fouts.
As to your James' name.....I looked but I don't have documentation as to his full name. Families do have definite naming patterns and James Knox Polk is a name used more than once in the Whitlock line. As you may know James Knox Polk was the president 1845-1849. He was also the governor of Tennessee from 1839-1841; Speaker of the House of Rep from Tennessee 1835-1839.
