OMG! Stu, you are my hero!!!
I too, have searched for the 1880 census. How did you do it? Longley turns into Whitford? At a glance of that draft reg, I thought perhaps this Hannah was a married sister or if his mother, she had remarried. I see how that could have caused vital info to go 'missing'. I have a copy of the "Narrative of the Whitford Family" written by William Whitford-June 1861. Republished by Donald E. Schaefer.
Do you think these Whitfords could have come from any of the William Whitford line (huge family-all early New Englander's) or as you've noted, they are actually Longley's from England/Ireland?
