Hi Christine, After I got your reply this afternoon I called my aunt (she's my aunt by marriage). She still lives in Canaan, CT (about 2 hrs from me) so when I go to visit her she takes me around to show me all the family homes, cemeteries, etc. Her grandfather was George Henry Smith who married Nora Casey. They had three children, only one of whom lived to adulthood - Elizabeth Agnes Smith who married Serene Gandelli (my aunt's parents). In his later years George Smith lived with them when my aunt was young. She remembers his brother Fred visiting several times but apparently George would never let him into the house and always told him to leave. Were Fred and Carrie divorced? My aunt said Fred was married again and if Carrie was too then they must have separated. Their daughter, Catherine, lived with her grandparents and apparently was married early to a Dudley Couch and had a daughter born ca. 1938. Other records, including her gravestone, indicate she married Edward F. Ball and that's who she's buried with in the Smith plot in Sheffield. If Catherine lived with her grandparents then where was her brother Walter, your grandfather, during this time? Fred worked on the Granger Farm in Canaan and also lived in Mahopac, NY at one time. Where was Carrie? Do you know anything about the family Bible? Catherine S. Smith had the Bible because she lived with her grandparents. Then my aunt's family needed it at one time to verify info for George's railroad pension (Sheffield records for the time of his birth are missing) and so they got it from Catherine. Then she showed up at the house one day and took it back. Question is - where is it now? According to my aunt's mother, the Tarbox relative was on the Whitford side and he was a minister during the Revolution so didn't have to serve. I haven't been able to find anything on this. The Whitford family goes back to RI but haven't connected the Tarbox family yet. I would love to get copies of the pictures you have. We have some here too and I'm trying to get my aunt to go thru everything she has and identify what she can. I did a little more digging on the Woodward children - nothing more on Hattie but did find out that Charles Eugene Woodward married Lillian F. Kingman in Brockton, MA in 1897. They lived there and Whitman and Abington, MA before moving to Franklin Co., ME. Apparently they had no children. Contact me thru my regular email address - mwsheld@sbcglobal.net. Where do you live? I go up to Canaan , CT quite often, which is right across the state line from Sheffield, MA. Have you seen the cemetery? I have pictures of the graves. According to my aunt, Charles A. Smith was from Germany but no one knew where and he wouldn't talk about it. He supposedly immigrated about 1868 and had changed his name when he came to his country but his death record says his parents were Philip and Margaret Smith. At the time of his marriage to Catherine M. (Whitford) Woodward in Canaan, CT on 20 Apr 1875 he was of Sheffield, MA. Looking forward to hearing from you.
