Paul, I am not certain I can be much help but here is what I know.
1. If you want to read about Whitfield Hall find or buy a copy of Vallie Jo Fox Whitfield's book "Virginia History and Whitfield Biographies.
It will provide you with the most information we know about the various Whitfield's in England and their relationship to the Whitfield's of Whitfield Hall.
2. My husband is a descendent of the Whitfield line. The earliest Whitfield that we have in his direct line is William Whitefield born January 1750 in England.John married Mary Towler in 1772 in Goochland Co., VA.
3. During the time that I was researching, I met a person on-line who believed she had documented William's birth in Northumberland.I will look for her phone number and name if you believe this would be useful to you.She lives near Wash, D. C. and travels to England regularly to do research.
