Mary Ellen:
I think Jean Lemon is dead on center in that we may have to start in the Parish, and go forward from there. That is, Unless someone is able to respond to our queries with primary proofs. There appears to be quite a lot of confusion over Luke Sr, and Luke Jr, who was married to whom, et al.
I can say that the DAR recognizes Capt. Luke Whitfield, born 1719, as married to Rachel Powell. This Luke is the brother of Matthew born 1717 (from whom I am aledgedly descended) and married to a Miss Warren. I saw this in the Patriot Books myself. However, this would make them both into their 60s during the beginning of the war. It's possible, but I have my doubts.
When I was at the DAR library in Nov.,I pulled the papers on several ancestors-unfortunately not any Whitfields. However, the librian on duty explained the process of gathering papers at the turn of the last century. In the beginning, ladies sent in their primary and secondary proofs and the proofs were returned if they were original(no Xerox back then). When the DAR began excepting copies of original proofs, those copies were kept in the patriot files. However, in the late 70s or early 80s, the NSDAR was apparently running out of space (before networks/computers), so they returned quite a bit of this paperwork either to the chapters, or ladies.Consequently, one can not count on the original proofs, or copies of them being there. I found this to be true with my John Daniel.
Getting back to Luke (and Matthew)-it is perhaps as one Bob Burton purports, that it is Luke Jr who served in the War and who was married to Rachel Powell, leaving Luke Sr and the elder Matthew to be married to Warren girls. This is all pure conjecture on my part. But I will move them up on my list. And when I get back to DC in the New Year I'll pull the packages on the Whitfields and see hat is there. If not, perhaps a trip to Craven Co, in SC will be on my agenda.
Let's keep in touch and hopefully we can get to the bottom of this mystery, or at least a little closer to it!
Regards,
Missy
