It is very interesting how people accept legend, old records and unsubstantiated information as fact.
The daughter of William Blackman was not Lucretia but Elizabeth Blackman Sasser Sutton.
Thomas Sutton was her second husband.
Census records show that Thomas Sutton's second wife was potentially 10 years younger than him. Therefore, she would have been too young to have given birth to a child before marrying him much less have given birth to his first child in abt 1780.
Whitfield researchers know that Lucretia was a Whitfield. Sutton researchers want to cling to the Lucretia Blackman story.
The Suttons of Louisiana descend through the Blackman line through Thomas Jr's wife Bathsheba Crumpler. Her mother was a Blackman. Thomas Jr's stepmother was also a Blackman.
Thomas Sr's first wife was Lucretia Whitfield.
She was the dtr and sister of Luke Whitfield SR/Jr of South Carolina.
She named her son and my ancestor Luke Whitfield Sutton after the death of her brother Capt Luke Whitfield in abt 1796.
There is absolutely no other evidence that a Lucretia Blackman ever existed.
The Blackman was Elixabeth.
