Hi Josie,
Have looked at the parish records and found the following
John Whiteley re headstone died of asthma aged 52 buried
7 Nov 1800. None of his children are listed in the christening records, although there was a Jn Whiteley christen 19 Aug 1747 son of Isasc Whiteley Barkisland weaver.
Regarding your family
Daniel christen 1 Oct 1777 son of John Whiteley Barkisland
From 1772-1791 occupations were not recorded unfortunately it makes it difficult to sort out siblings as another John Whiteley is having his family at the same time.
Since Daniel's son was a paper maker its most likely his father is John the papermaker the other John is a weaver and possibly my Eli's father.
John the papermaker had two other children for sure his first is Samuel c 20 oct 1765 and then David c 31 Jan 1768 both records record he is a papermaker.
The other John a weaver had Sarah 1766,Sally 1768, Grace 1769, Sally 1770 and Eli 1771 [who maybe the one that died on4 Feb 1776 the location was illegible] which would make Eli 1776 his also and Nathaniel 1777 his [since the other, had Daniel in 1777]
Other christening with a father John Whiteley in Barkisland include
Hannah 1772, Mary 1772
Susanna 1774,Robert 1774
Martha 1775, Mary 1775
Betty 1779,Joseph 1779
William 1780
Martha 1782
Not sure where I found this information but I have written on my notes that John the weaver married Sarah Crossley 1765[Hemsworth(?)] and John the papermaker married 1864 to either Mary Priestley or Mary Rhodes
Daniel 1777 has four children
Martha c 8 June 1800
David c 6 June 1802
Barbara c 9 Dec 1804
Daniel c 12 March 1809
all christening say Daniel Whiteley Barkisland papermaker by Mary.
With regards John Whiteley paper maker, there are no other paper makers older in the records for Barkisland to be consider for his father however there is a Samuel Whiteley[same name as his oldest child] weaver who may have been his father
Jn of samuel whiteley Barf[Barkisland] Weaver c 16 Feb 1743
I think samuel was married to Susanah. I believe one of these John's was samuel son with the other being a weaver and a grandchild called Susanna. John the weaver maybe Eli the clother son also christen in 1743.
If only the occupations had been continued to be recorded it would be clear cut!
Hope you have some luck with the gravestones
Karen
