George J. Whitelaw - Australia - 1845

I have discovered in the course of researching my family trees that George J Whitelaw 1817 - 1867 was my great-great grandfather. He came to Australia i believe with his Brother John and his wife Janet Law-they had been married in Barony, Lanark, Scotland. They were supposed to be teachers at a school set up by John Dunmore-Lang who was the first Presbyterian Minister in the new colony in Sydney. HOwever they apparently were not happy and went to western NSW around the Sofala area where gold had been found and tried their luck. Unfortunately the conditions were not good for their health and they ended up going back to a suburb of Sydney where George & Janet both died in 1867 from the effects of mine dust etc.
They left 6 children - one of the girls Jemima Margaret Muir WHITELAW married a Charles Perry from England and they were my biological great grandparents.
Can someone point me in the right direction to find out more about their background and about the Monkland Martyr?
