John WHITEHURST b.1816 Norfolk, VA

Fellow Researchers:
I have hit a brick wall in attempting to research my relation John W. WHITEHURST. I have a letter dated 9/26/1866 written from Nelson County, VA. He describes himself as a farmer. I find him also in the 1850 census living in Norfolk with my cousin Alice WHITE and her husband James E. WICKINGS. He is 24 at this time. WHITEHURST lists his birthplace as Virginia and the listing shows a wife Virginia C. and a five month old daughter Ann Victoria. I can't find him in subsequent censuses. I also don't know how he is related to Alice WHITE. Can anyone give me any direction? This name is very common and I haven't had any luck finding his parents, etc.
Thank you!
