Seeking Information on Bishop Henry John Whitehouse (1803-1874) and His Family
Greetings to all the Members of the Whitehouse Family!
For the past five years, I have been researching the histories of the buildings in the Cathedral Complex and the memorial gifts, including the 18 large stained glass windows, in the Nave of the Cathedral Church of the Episcopal Diocese of West Missouri, Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, located in Kansas City, Missouri.
Our parish has a unique history in that we were not founded as the Cathedral Church, and in fact, began as two separate parishes, Grace Church and Trinity Church, which of necessity were merged into Grace and Holy Trinity Church in 1917.(The parish became the Cathedral of the Diocese in 1935.)
The building that Trinity Church built from 1887 through 1888 was designed by a Chicago architectural firm, and we have always known that.Unfortunately, there was no record of the name of the firm or the individual architects in any of our records. So, since at least 1917, this information had been lost.
Last Saturday, November 13, merely by chance, we found the name of the architectural firm in the caption of a photograph of old Trinity Church, which was in a book on the architectural heritage of Missouri.
The name of the firm was Burling & Whitehouse, and the two named partners in that firm were Edward Burling (1819-1892) and Francis Meredith Whitehouse (1848-1938).
I have so far only found circumstantial evidence, but I believe that Francis was the son of the Second Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Illinois, Henry John Whitehouse (1803-1874).However, I have not been able to find any source which lists the names of all of Bishop Whitehouse's children.Even his obituary in The New York Times simply states that he had five sons and one daughter.
I found one source which told me that Bishop Whitehouse's wife was Evelina Harriet Bruen, and that she died in 1864, but that is all the information I have on her, as well.
Can any member of the Whitehouse family give me more information on the family of this very important cleric?
I would like to know the birth and death dates of his wife, and the names of his children.Rootsweb.com listed only one son named "William".Another source stated that the Bishop had a son named "George" who was a leading Egyptologist.
If you have information to share with me, please contact me directly at [email protected].
Thank you so very much for your assistance in this matter!
Sincerely,
Randal J. Loy
