HOWELL-WHITEHEAD, Edgefield & Richland County SC, 1760-1950 timeframe.
I have a HOWELL - WHITEHEAD - MELTON problem.
I have James WHITEHEAD born abt 1760 in MD or Edgefield County, SC and he married Susannah "Sally" MELTON born abt 1765 in Edgefield County SC. Possibly married abt 1785 most likely in SC. They had four children; John born abt 1785, Mary born abt 1787, Matthew born abt 1795 & Sophia born abt 1805.
I have covered censuses 1790, 1800, 1810 of Edgefield County, SC on the above and that's how I came up with the birth dates after hours of figuring the timeline. Also used the will of James Whitehead for names of children and wife.
Here's the mystery. Sarah "Sophia" WHITEHEAD married a Joseph R. HOWELL and had 5 known children from censuses 1850 -1880 of Richland County, SC. The name of Sophia in the censuses used were Sarah S. HOWELL, but on the death certificates of four of the children the mother was named Sophia WHITEHEAD. The children's names were; Mary Martha born abt 1848, John Jacob born 1853, Jessie Louise born 1859 married Josiah D. HUGGINS, Charles Thomas born 1864, and Joseph Glenn born 1866, he died in TN.
Now,... I thought Sophia WHITEHEAD born abt 1805 married Joseph R. HOWELL, but the second paragraph above showed Joseph R. HOWELL was born abt 1826 in SC and Sarah S. WHITEHEAD was born abt 1830 in SC. So, it doesn't look like this Sophia WHITEHEAD is the daughter of James WHITEHEAD and Susannah "Sally" MELTON.
If anyone has info on these families I would like to correspond. Please help with the confusion.
Thanks, Lois
